Charlotte physicians and a non-profit executive explore the medical humanities and the arts as therapeutic intervention. What role do the arts and humanities play in medical education? How do the humanities help caregivers be better observers and interpreters? How do the arts help providers and patients with social and emotional learning components? Join in on the conversation!
Our Panelists:
Dr. Dael Waxman is a physician coach and Professor Emeritus of Family Medicine at Atrium Health. He practiced family medicine for 35 years. He is experienced in physician leadership, mind/body medicine, and mindfulness-based stress reduction. Dr. Waxman completed his medical education at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.
Dr. Kimmery Martin is a novelist, educator, and former emergency medicine doctor. She is the author of Doctors and Friends, The Antidote for Everything, and The Queen of Hearts. She teaches narrative medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr. Martin completed her medical education at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
Dr. Sapana Adhikari is a medical illustrator and emergency medicine physician at Atrium Health. She is the author of Diagnosketch: a visual guide to medical diagnosis for the non-medical audience. She teaches narrative medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr. Adhikari completed her medical education at Boston University School of Medicine.
Natalie Allen is founder & CEO of The Arts Empowerment Project, which provides arts experiences to at-risk children. She formerly served as Chief of the Domestic Unit in the Attorney General’s Office for the District of Columbia. She has served the Charlotte community as a Mecklenburg County Guardian ad Litem volunteer. Natalie received her J.D. from The George Washington University Law School.
