WISDOM WEDNESDAY
with guest Joseph "Piko" Ewoodzie, Jr., PhD.
AUGUST 18 , 2021 | 12 PM | VIRTUAL EVENT
There is a lot of talk about the importance of belonging in our lives. Many people argue that it is key to a flourishing life. But what is belonging? How do we go about belonging and with whom? How do we find our tribe? Do we make our world by where we choose to live, by what we choose to do, by our religious affiliation, our nationality, our race? What fuels our habit of creating an "us" and a "them"? Are our dividing lines destructive or are they how we create belonging? How would our lives be different if we could see beyond these lines to belong with anyone or everyone?
Join us for a conversation with Joseph "Piko" Ewoodzie, Jr., PhD. Piko is the Malcom O. Partin Associate Professor of Sociology at Davidson College. He uses qualitative methods to examine how marginalized populations in urban locales make sense of inequalities in their everyday lives. Piko investigates how people interpret their social selves and order their relationships; how they create, maintain, and transform social and symbolic boundaries; and how boundaries constrain and enable their lives. His dissertation will be published in his new book , "Getting Something to Eat in Jackson," an ethnography of everyday eating practices among socioeconomically diverse African Americans living in Jackson, Mississippi. Piko earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Wisdom Wednesdays is a lunch-time conversation series that explores deep insights about ourselves and the world. A mid-day break to enrich your thinking, life, and connections.
