THE FORUM

FEATURING Mark Peres

DEC. 5, 2023 | 6:15 PM | IN-PERSON EVENT | tickets: $15

You’re invited to the December 5, 2023 gathering of The Forum!

"Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness." — Desmond Tutu

The holidays are time of renewal and repair. And yet the headlines have us in a constant state of worry and despair. The forces of de-humanization are all around us. What different forms does dehumanization take? What explains it? Where do we see it today? What’s at stake?

Is it structural change that we need? Is it something more personal and spiritual? How do we see and hear each other? Join us for a discussion on re-humanizing our world.

Mark Peres, founder and executive director of The Charlotte Center, and professor of ethics at Johnson & Wales University, will offer his thoughts, drawing on philosophy, history, social science, and wisdom traditions, on a way forward.

Mark is a writer, educator, and civic entrepreneur. He is the former host of the On Life and Meaning podcast and author of On Life and Meaning: 100 Essays Inspired by 100 Guests, a book about what matters most. He teaches courses on global ethics and leadership. He is the founder and former editor of Charlotte Viewpoint, a magazine about city life and culture. He is a graduate of The Florida State University College of Law, and of Rollins College, where he studied history and philosophy.

Connect. Consider. Ignite. The program runs from 6:15 PM to 8:00 PM including time for conversation, connections, and Q&A.

The Forum has a three-part structure:

• First third: Participants connect and build relationships in small break-out groups prompted by a question;

• Middle third: Participants consider a presentation that ends with the speaker posing a community-facing question;

• Final third: Participants discuss the question, igniting new ideas and interactions.

THE HUMANITIES | Languages | Literature | History | Philosophy | Religion | And More!

Participate in the important questions of our time. The Forum is a conversation and speaker series that brings people together to explore challenges and opportunities that affect human flourishing through the lens of the humanities and civic imagination.
